Strategic vs Operational HR (23-Jan-2018)

I frequently come across new entrants HR guys, who are afraid of the word "Strategy" & that motivated me to try to explain the concept in easy to understand words. To put it simply –Operational would look at the short term. Strategic would look at the long term. When a recruiter gets into the process of Recruitment to close a position, he acts as an Operational HR. When that guy defines that process, turns that process into policy, forecasts total manpower required in next one year & plan the activities to achieve those numbers, he becomes a strategic HR. I personally like Wayne Brockbank's Competitive Advantage model to understand different stages of HR. 1) Operationally Reactive-Implement the basics.(Ex-Hiring) 2) Operationally Proactive-Improves the basics.(Ex-Improving the Hiring Process) 3) Strategically Reactive-Makes Strategy happen.(Ex-Change Management as per Change in the Business Strategy) 4) Strategically Proactive-Creates Strategic Alternative(Ex-Identifying Merger & Acquisition opportunities) Remember the most damaging statement is "It's always been done that way". The strategy is to make the good processes better. Do you want to discuss in detail or contribute, Feel free to ping me, Its free 😉 Anupam S Shlok
